Abstract

[EN] This study covers the action of various salts of Li, Na, K and NH4+ on the root tip meristems of Allium Cepa and it has been found that there is a series of activities of the corresponding cations on mitosis. This series is in decreasing order Li+ > Na+ > K+ ≈ NH4+ on the other hand, the activity of the tested anions shows no notable differentiation. Further, within certain limits, the action does not appear to depend on the number of cations present in the solution and is presumabily a function of the molarity and not of normality. The substantces tested have a directly lethal zone up a concentration of 0.2 M approximately, there being a sublethal zone up to 0.05 - 0.02 M. The most important reactions provoked are agglutination and contraction of the chromosomes. Both these effects appear to be co-related and an attempt is made to explain them by applying the theory of coacervation. It seems that those effects are a function of the concentration of the agent, as there is a concentration which produces simultaneously agglutination and contraction. Li+ is remarkable as a stickiness producing agent. There is very little c-mitotic action.
