El asiriólogo británico George Smith fue el protagonista de un descubrimiento espectacular. Entre los documentos asirios de arcilla traídos al British Museum por Layard y Rassam, y procedentes de la biblioteca del palacio de los reyes asirios, identificó un poema en escritura asiria cuneiforme con una leyenda casi idéntica al relato dramático del diluvio en Génesis 6-9 y mucho más antigua que éste.
