Abstract

[EN]The term grazed fuelbreaks refers to those low combustibility areas, located strategically in the forest, which are grazed by livestock to offset vegetation growth and so maintain them in adequate conditions for wildfire prevention purposes. This silvopastoral practice is increasingly used in Mediterranean Europe, where there is a need to improve the prevention strategies set up to face the proliferation of wildfires registered in the last few decades. Indeed, as argued in the introduction, the generalised decline in livestock grazing on range and forestlands has contributed to this increase in wildfires; currently, the wildfire prevention programmes themselves are encouraging its recovery, as they make use of livestock grazing as a complementary tool for the maintenance of fuelbreaks. Andalusia is one of the regions where the silvopastoral management of fuelbreaks has recently started to be used. This management being innovative, the Government of Andalusia sought the scientific support of the Mediterranean Pastures and Silvopastoral Systems group from the CSIC (Spanish National Research Council) to perform the first experiments and support the creation of the Grazed Fuelbreak Network in Andalusia (RAPCA). This PhD thesis was developed in the frame of this collaboration, so the studies presented in the different chapters are all applied research and aim to answer very specific questions, always linked to the integration of livestock grazing into wildfire prevention.
