Abstract

[ENG] On the SW border of the Dueto basin (Central Plateau of Spain) there are important opaline masses formed of silicified sedimentary rocks that can become activated by addition of lime (puzzolanic reaction). These opaline substances contain silica in different forms, with a different reaction to the presence of lime. Study of opaline rockilime mixtures of several ages shows that opal-A is the most active, initially originating poorly crystallized silicates with a low CaISi reaction that later evolve to tobermorite during the hardening process. A reaction mechanism for this process is proposed. Since rocks similar to those considered are well know without they have been used as construction materials, the present study could be of general interest.
