Este texto trata sobre la figura de Diego Pérez de Mesa, astrólogo, matemático y orientalista español de los siglos XVI-XVII. De entre sus múltiples actividades, se señala su papel en la historia literaria de la leyenda de la Cueva de Salamanca, a partir del estudio del prólogo de su Tratado de la astrología judiciaria, que se encuentra manuscrito en la Biblioteca Tomás Navarro Tomás del CSIC (BTNT, ms. RM 3876). El artículo propone que este prólogo es la primera versión literaria moderna de dicha leyenda, y está en la base de la tradición posterior.
