Magnetic fabrics in sedimentary Permian red beds in the Cadí basin (Southern Pyrenees)

Abstract

In the Cadí basin (southern Pyrenees) a magnetic fabrics study has been carried out in detrital continental sediments from the Permian Lower Red and Upper Red Units (20 sites) in red siltstones, shales and medium-coarse grain sandstones, obtaining cylinders and oriented fragments. The magnetic foliation is parallel to the bedding plane. The maximum susceptibility axis, K1, is arranged in two subhorizontal maxima after tectonic correction: 1) with N-S direction and 2) with E-W direction. The palaeocurrents are arranged from an E-W to a WNW-ESE direction, thus indicating both sedimentary and tectonic conditionings.
