La mezquita y alquería de La Graja (Higueruela, Albacete)

Abstract

Las excavaciones en este yacimiento han aportado en 2021 el hallazgo de la mezquita, la primera conocida en la provincia de Albacete y la única de carácter rural en Castilla-La Mancha. Además, el proyecto de investigación (CSIC-Instituto de Estudios Albacetenses-Universidad de Alicante) está desvelando en La Mancha oriental un modelo de poblamiento caracterizado por su densidad, asociado a la ganadería y la agricultura de secano, muy diferente del arquetipo del mundo rural andalusí vinculado al regadío. Estos campesinos vivían modestamente, en alquerías situadas en llano y desprovistas de elementos de defensa comunitarios. La mayoría surgen a principios del siglo XI, en un contexto de crecimiento poblacional que impulsó la colonización de estas zonas menos favorables; mientras que el abandono generalizado se produjo a finales de ese mismo siglo por la inseguridad que ocasionó el avance conquistador cristiano.
