[EN] This article addresses the redefinition of ethnic identities in the Peruvian Andes through the changes, conflicts and fractures that the recent sale of communal land for the construction of the new Cuzco International Airport has created in the town of Chinchero. The erasure of the peasant community model that appeared with the 1969 agrarian reform, as well as the emergence of new forms of social organisation in a context of tourist development and neoliberalism, are examined. It will be argued that this project has altered customary patterns of communal land tenure, inducing a new relationship between the peasant and the land. The discussion focuses in the power of large tourist infrastructures in the production of new identity politics that challenge preconceived and rigid ideas about an indigenous ‘identity’ in the Andes.
