This article locuses upon the process of construction of AIDS in Western modern medicine from 1981 lo 1995. In dealing with each one of the four simultaneous or successive paradigms (namely AIDS as a syndrome, as a specific entity, as a global pandemic and as a chronic disease) in which this process has crystallized up till now, the close interaction between biological and social lactors have been emphasized Some preliminary sociocultural consideratfons hove been provfded in order to help the reader to adequately place this new disease right at the end of the twentieth century.
