L’area monumentale di Tusculum: nuove ricerche e proposte interpretative (età arcaica - età imperiale)* The monumental area of Tusculum: new research and interpretative proposals (Archaic period - Imperial period)

Abstract

[EN]This contribution presents a summary of the new research carried out in Tusculum between 2018 and 2023. The excavations were conducted in the monumental area of the city and in the southern part of the forum. This work introduces a systematisation of the archaeological documentation produced in almost 30 years of EEHAR research as well as new interpretative proposals on buildings partially excavated during the first campaigns and now fully uncovered (basilicas). For the first time in the history of studies on the Tuscolan forum, a series of plans with the periodisation of the area have been produced. These documents provide a coherent account of the diachronic evolution of the area under examination. By integrating the new excavation data, we present an archaeological plan of the forum with the different phases besides a graphic synthesis that provides clarity on the various historical phases in the monumental area. The data from the new excavations open up further reflections on the typology of the buildings of Tusculum. Firstly, on the chronologies of the two basilicas in the forum in two different periods of urban history and, secondly, on the interpretation of a building that was partially known and completed in the aforementioned campaigns (Curia / Temple). In a second part of the article, the building interventions are related to the history of the city known from historical and epigraphic sources.
