La figura del sacerdote romano Mateo Renzi (?-1630) se ha mantenido prácticamente desconocida hasta la actualidad. Representa un magnífico ejemplo de los agentes políticos de segunda fila que recorrieron Europa en el primer tercio del siglo XVII desempeñando las más variadas misiones para sus señores. El caso de Renzi muestra el vigor del triángulo establecido entre Madrid, Roma y Viena, que fue la clave para el mantenimiento de la hegemonía de los Habsburgo en el juego político europeo. He represented a clear model of those political agents of second row which played diverse missions in several European courts at the beginnings of the 17th century. His case shows the strength of the axis between Madrid, Rome and Vienna as clue for the maintenance of the Habsburgs’ hegemony in European policy. His duties as diplomat, clergyman, political theorist and propagandist are a relevant thread for analysing the dynastic and confessional goals of the Spanish politics.
