El pistacho: avances y retos

Abstract

[EN] In the last decade we have witnessed a very rapid change in the cultivation of pistachio in Spain: area, plant material, organic cultivation, the appearance of investments by large capitals, etc. Spain, with more than 1% of world production, may have a niche: producing a quality and organic pistachio. In this paper we review the advances made in cultivation and the contributions from our research group regarding two important topics: grafting and micropropagation of select clonal rootstocks. Finally, we analyze some of the challenges that the crop currently faces: the appearance of pests and diseases due to the greater planted area, the lack of certification of the plant produced, the distortion of the local market due to the appearance of macro–plantations of 1,000 ha or more or the disappearance of research teams that will no longer support farmers.
