La malaria es una enfermedad milenaria. Sus orígenes se retrotraen, cuando menos, al Pleistoceno medio. Continúa como una de las mayores amenazas para la salud humana, pese al esperanzador descenso en la incidencia y mortalidad de esta plaga desde comienzos del siglo XXI.
