La modernización durante el franquismo: urbanismo, tráfico y descontento social en Madrid (1957-1973)

Abstract

En esta investigación se analiza la eliminación de los bulevares y la construcción de los pasos elevados en Madrid para caracterizar la modernización de la ciudad a través de la extensión del vehículo privado durante la década de 1960, la cual resultó en una profunda crisis urbana en el momento de su materialización. Metodológicamente, se conceptualiza lo urbano como un fenómeno de connotaciones globales, inserto en problemáticas que superan el contexto nacional. Las obras públicas que impulsaron esta transformación han de ser relacionadas con el urbanismo y la ingeniería del tráfico, dos redes de conocimiento técnico e internacional con un hilo conductor en sus propósitos: el privilegio de la circulación en automóvil en detrimento de un peatón cada vez más marginado de las calles. Esta apuesta por el transporte privado condujo al fracasó en la articulación de Madrid, entendido como área metropolitana, en términos de centro y periferia. Mientras que el consistorio recurrió a la propaganda para defender su idea de modernización, cundió un descontento generalizado y transversal que se sustanció en la crítica de los pasos elevados, conectado a su vez en las lógicas europeas de rechazo a las aplicaciones prácticas del urbanismo posterior a la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
