Between bad habit and disease. The medical-social construction of alcoholism as a disease in Spain (XIX and XX centuries)

Abstract

[EN] Objective: in this paper we study the alcoholism in Spain during the 2nd half of the XIXth century and early XXth C. Material and methods: the available information regarding 2nd half of the XIXth century and early XXth C was analyzed. Results: in the spite of their consideration as an illness, we focus on how the doctors did not break up with the preexistent social image of the drunk. Conclusions: the doctors maintained an ambiguous thesis on the alcoholism, between vice and illness, a vision where moral discuorse straped the scientific one.
