Morphotypes and size estimation in eggs of the long-snouted seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus (Project Hippocampus)

Abstract

In most fishes, eggs are spherical and symmetrical, and size can be easily calculated. However, eggs in seahorses have asymmetrical morphotypes (round or pear shaped), which makes difficult calculation of egg size. A simple method is provided to estimate surface and volume in unfertilised eggs of the seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus
