Fluvial contribution of SPM to the Cantabrian Sea: the Eo River

Abstract

The relationship bettween river water discharge and suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the Cantabrian Rivers and their SPM fluxes to the Bay of Biscay. In the abstract, this study is exemplified for the Eo River (24.4 m3 s-1 of annual flow and 930 km2 of catchment area). It has a SPM concentration ranging between <1 mg L-1 (<2 m3 s-1) to 95 mg L-1 (121 m3 s-1) and the average contribution to the sea was 3.4 106 kg a-1 (2% of the total Cantabrian fluvial load). It provides a good example of the role of small European River
