Abstract

The Spanish gill-net (volanta) fishery that exploits Moroccan waters comprises 30 fishing vessels of approximately 50 t each, based mainly in the port of La Guardia. These vessels are currently working under the condi tions established within the framework of the 1995 fishing agreement between the European Union and Morocco. Since 1981, the IEO has monitored this fishery, obtaining the statistical and biological data from Algeciras harbour that constitute the basis of this report. This fishery targets mainly European hake, Merluccius merluccius (Linnaeus, 1758), and Senegalese hake, Merluccius senegalensis Cadenat, 1950. During 1996, 2369 t were landed, with these two species accounting for 89 % of total weight, during 402 expeditions totalling 3396 fishing days . Between 1991 and 1993, the fishery experienced a period of expansion, with the yields of M. merluccius rising to more than 700 kg/fishing day, the highest in the historical data series. The most noteworthy features of the fishery are: its high degree of specialisation in hake, focused principally on the adult fraction of the stock; the stability of the annual yields; and the use of multi-filament nets since the end of 1994, in compliance with current Moroccan legislation.
