In this paper we have studied the relationship between depth and age of hake. We have used data from ten research surveys, carried out between 1974 and 1981 in the divisions VIII-c and IX-a of ICES. A clear stratification of ages was observed. lt exists a significant tendency to in crease the mean age with depth (r = 0.80). On the other hand, the recruitment level detected in 1974 seriously decreased in the following 5 years, although in 1980 a slightly better recruitment was recorded. The hake nursery of the Galician continental shelf (100- 200 m deep) is the most important nursery area known from Cap Breton to Gibraltar strait (southern stock of european hake).
