The Barons' Hall in Castel Nuovo (Naples) is one of the most important, refined and impressive architectural designs of the Late Middle Ages in Europe. Nevertheless its square floor plan and composite vault was not amongst the most popular European styles of the age, despite the fact that it had been extensively used in traditional Islamic Palaces in the Kingdom of Castile, homeland of Alfonso V of Aragon, who commissioned the building. Although hard evidence is lacking, it would not be amiss to assume that the architecture of those palaces and other religious buildings influenced the King when he decided to built a new royal hall for his court.
