Abstract

[EN] The history of Carlism is based on a full range of reference books, most of them with a romantic slant and scarcely documented. In spite of these severe lacks, the study of Carlist Army has great interest. It provides important keys for understanding not only the conflict chronology, but also the Carlism supports as social movement. Basically, the Carlist Army was organised by the system of levies. Nevertheless, there was a minor group of volunteers too. The levies faced a strong popular opposition. In many cases, resistance also came from local institutions. Therecruitment did not respect nor took into consideration the “foral” legal frame, which was put out effect in several occasions. The interpretation of exemption rules varied noticeably in each province.
