Abstract

Abstract: A series of 30 ichthyoplankton samples proceeding from 28 stations distributed along the nortwestern sector of the Alboran Sea during a March, 1982 survey have been studied. Results from Bongo and Neuston hauls are compared and the study is completed with a brief overview of some significant parameters such as: surface temperatures and salinities, zooplankton biomass, chlorophyll and nutrients. Sardine eggs and larvae have represented 16.1% and 17.4% of the total catches, respectively. Two sardine spawning areas have been detected west (maximum egg concentration of 572 eggs/m2) and east (maximum of 175 eggs/m2) to the bay of Málaga, overlapped with areas of maximum egg concentrations. Highest values of zooplankton biomass and chlorophyll concentration are recorded in the area of the bay of Málaga with maximum values of 57.8 and 54.5 mg/m3 in dry weight and a maximum chlorophyll “a” concentration recorded at the superficial level of 5.91 mg/m3. This area due to its particular hydrological conditions and the size distribution analysis of sardine larvae seems to be adequate as a nursery ground for this species.
