Catálogo de los yacimientos de Vertebrados del Pleistoceno en las terrazas de los ríos Jarama y Manzanares

Abstract

Son muy numerosos los restos fósiles de vertebrados, especialmente de mamíferos y entre estos de macromamíferos, que se han recuperado hasta ahora en las terrazas del Cuaternario de los valles del Jarama y Manzanares. En este trabajo realizamos la determinación taxonómica de los restos fósiles de muchos yacimientos que estaban inéditos y la revisión de los publicados anteriormente a la luz de la sistemática moderna. Pretende ser por tanto una síntesis de todos los datos paleontológicos de que se dispone actualmente en dichas terrazas, así como una puesta en valor de los fósiles de vertebrados que hay depositados en distintos museos e instituciones. En muchos casos ha sido posible asignar una edad biocronológica a los yacimientos en función de la asociación faunística determinada. Se pone de manifiesto también la extraordinaria riqueza y potencial paleontológico de las terrazas del Jarama y Manzanares.

A large number of fossil vertebrate remains, particularly of macromammals, have been recovered until present in the Quaternary terraces of the Jarama and Manzanares valleys. In this paper we identify taxonomicaly the unpublished fossil remains from many sites and re-examine in the ligth of modern systematics the formerly published pieces from those terraces wich are available nowadays. This article tries to be a synthesis of the paleontolological data and also to attach importance to the collections of vertebrate fossils in several museums and institutions. In many cases, as far as possible, we assign a biochronological age to the settlements based on the identified faunal assemblages. Here also is shown the great paleontological potentiality and richness of the Jarama and Manzanares terraces.
