Vertebrados del Pleistoceno del Jarama y Manzanares

Abstract

In this work the systematic study and synthesis, of the vertebrates, mainly mammals, discovered until now in the Pleistocene terraces of de Jarama and Manzanares rivers has been undertaken. To do this, we re-examined most of the fossil remains from collections of several museums and institutions. Many taxonomical identifications were not published before and others have been re-examinated on the basis of modern systematics. Biochonologically, there are no Lower Pleistocene faunas, but nevertheless there are many Middle Pleistocene and Upper Pleistocene faunas. Between Middle and Upper Pleistocene is shown a remarkable change in composition of the macromammal faunas by evolution of some taxa, and extinction and inmigration of other. Palaeoclimatically, the Middle Pleistocene faunas indicate temperate climatic conditions, always more temperate than Upper Pleistocene faunas in which they appear some taxa that could bear more sever weather, but in any case much milder than in northern areas of Europe.
