Thermal treatment on a natural diet and its effects on growth of the cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis. The effects of thermal treatment and water removal from a prey normally used to feed the cuttlefish with good results were tested. The heat, either wet (boiling during one minute) or dry (in the oven during 16 hours, at 60ºC) altered significantly the quality of the food. Despite similar ingestion rates to those of the control (frozen shrimp), animal fed these diets did not grow. Contrary, drying at negative temperatures (lyophilised at -40ºC) did not alter significantly the quality of the prey, since growth rates obtained were similar when feeding frozen shrimp.
