Abstract

Several trials of clove, Syzygium aromaticum L. (MerrampersandPerry), oil's efficacy as an anaesthetic wereconducted on Mediterranean yellowtail Seriola dumerili Risso, 1810, sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax Linnaeus, 1758, gilthead seabream Sparus aurata Linnaeus, 1758, dentex Dentex dentex Linnaeus, 1758 and sharp-snouted seabream Diplodus puntazzo Cetti, 1777. This product was found to be effective in all species at a dosage of about 40 ppt in seawater, causing total anaesthesia in fish after 3-6 min, with a recovery time of 2-5 min. No undesirable side effects were observed. Clove oil was found to present a number of advantages over other commonly used anaesthetics, including high efficacy at low doses, cost-efficiency, non-toxicity, potential positive side effects, and no need for a withdrawal time for selling the fish after its use.
