Abstract

An ontogenetic sequence of the Atlantic Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) larvae and juveniles reared in aquaculture conditions in 2012, was cleared and stained to determine normal cranial chondrification (and onset of ossification) for specimens ranging from 0 to 90 days post-hatching (dph). From 0 to 20 dph, standard length increases slowly while head length increases most rapidly between 0 and 7 dph. The onset of chondrification is initiated as early as 1 dph, and all cranial cartilages are present by 16 dph. Associated with the early chondrification of six of these cartilages, ten types of cranial malformations have been identified. These malformations potentially account for more than 34% of the mortality before 24 dph.
