Abstract

The Mediterranean yellowtail, amberjack or “lecha”, Seriola dumerili Risso, 1810, is a perciform teleost fish which belongs to the family Carangidae. Its culture started to be developed in the Mediterranean area on the second half of the 80’s derived from young individuals captured from the wild. In spite of the good culture expectancies, such as good growth rate (more than 1 kg the first year) and a good market price (nowadays about 20 euros/kg), later development of its production got limited because of the lack of guarantee of fingerlings supply and also by several serious problems related to pathology. The causes which have determined that their development hasn’t been achieved in the Mediterranean area, are reviewed and discussed.
