Abstract

During the nursery stage, clams can develop valve deformations. These growth alterations consist of divergences or separations of the anterior and posterior shell edges and, less commonly, are seen in the ventral margin. The causes of these deformations remain unclear. A batch of Manila clams Ruditapes philippinarum (Adamsampersand Reeve, 1850), prefattened in a raft equipped with airlift, having a deformation rate of 38.66 %, was seeded in the intertidal zone, with a density of 2.100 indiv/m², which is higher than what is generally used in the area, in case of abnormal mortalities. After 13 months they were harvested, with an average weight by plot (21 m²) of 9.87 ± 1.6 kg/m², a mortality rate of 65.72 ± 5.12 %, and a final density of 725 ± 108 indiv/m², of which 21.18 % were not marketable due to deformations.
