The present paper analyses the internal and external factors that are the driving forces behind aquaculture development. These include: specialization of production, incorporation of new technology, business concentration processes, new markets, cost structures, and production margins. The competitive position of Spanish aquaculture and the increased competition among companies stemming from their rising production capacity are also examined.
