Abstract

The sardine Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum 1792) is one of the most important species on the Spanish coast, due to its fishery and its role in traditional cuisine; moreover, besides, it is very interesting in aquariology, due to its colourfulness and the formation of attractive shoals swimming about the aquarium. Some public aquariums display them, nevertheless, capture and acclimation used to be a problem. The objective of this study is to test three types of anaesthetics for the fish transport, from the capture place to the aquarium's quarantine, with the aim of improving acclimation conditions for exhibit. Sardines were caught off Corunna and then transported using three anaesthetics (clove oil, MS-222 and 2-phenoxietanol). The results seem to indicate that the use of anaesthetics during transport is not essential for fish of commercial size, and that the observed mortality is due to handling stress.
