Primeras experiencias de cultivo de almeja y ostra japonesas en la Ría de Ribadeo

Abstract

En la Ría de Ribadeo se desarrolló a partir de los años sesenta una intensa actividad orientada al cultivo industrial de moluscos bivalvos comerciales, principalmente ostra plana (Ostrea edulis) y almeja fina (Tapes decussatus). Estas iniciativas dieron lugar a la creación de numerosos parques de cultivo en la zona intermareal, cuya explotación fue ejercida por empresas privadas (margen asturiano) o agrupaciones de mariscadores (margen gallego). Las elevadas mortandades en ostra plana y los bajos rendimientos de cultivo de la almeja fina, motivaron el paulatino abandono de esta actividad. En los últimos años en Francia, el sector conchicultor con una evolución y características similares al gallego, adoptó la decisión de cultivar y producir de forma masiva dos especies originarias del Pacífico: almeja japonesa (Tapes semidecussatus, Reeve) y ostra japonesa (cuassostrea gigas, thunberg). La idoneidad de esta decisión está respaldada por numerosos autores (DRENO, 1979; PARACHE, 1982; GRIZEL, en ICES, 1983). A raíz de esta experiencia, y con la posibilidad de obtener de forma constante, semilla de estas especies en criaderos nacionales de moluscos (hatcheries), se valoró la conveniencia de diversificar y complementar los cultivos existentes con la introducción de estas dos especies alóctonas. Estos primeros resultados de cultivo (CAMACHO y CUÑA, 1985; PASCUAL y QUINTANA, 1986) ya apuntan unas buenas perspectivas de producción de estos moluscos. En el presente trabajo se efectúa un análisis de producción y respuesta al cultivo de semilla de ambas especies, sembrada en distintas épocas, comparando diferentes métodos y sistemas de cultivo.
