Si revisamos la literatura sobre oceanografía y meteorología nos podemos encontrar con la expresión española EL NIÑO intercalada entre las palabras más ajenas a nuestro idioma y, además, una palabra que nos parece casi banal. Sin embargo, el llamado fenómeno de EL NIÑO es el acontecimiento oceanográfico y meteorológico más importante del planeta Tierra, con grandes consecuencias pesqueras no sólo en las costas del Perú, en donde se localiza el fenómeno, sino en otros lugares tan distantes como en el mar de California o el Atlántico tropical. En cierta medida, hay un eco de este fenómeno en todo el mundo.
