Abstract

Flemish CAp es un banco aislado de la plataforma costera americana localizado íntegramente en aguas internacionales y en donde la pesca está regulada por la NAFO (Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization). El Flemish Pass, zona con profundidades de 1.100 metros o superiores, impide o limita la migración de las especies que, confinadas en el área, forman poblaciones independientes. El aislamiento de las poblaciones depende, obviamente, de las características de cada especie: la platija americana, que ocupa las zonas menos profundas del banco, constituye la población más aislada entre las especies de interés comercial; el bacalao es capaz de alcanzar los 1.000 metros de profundidad, al menos ocasionalmente, y puede cruzar Flemish Pass para migrar al Gran Banco de Terranova; finalmente, el fletán negro, que habita zonas preferentemente de profundidad, no encuentra barreras para su distribución y constituye una única población que se extiende desde el Labrador y Terranova hasta Flemish Cap.
