Raza y racismo en el Caribe

Abstract

El debate académico sobre Raza y Racismo en el Caribe es reciente y plantea preguntas incómodas sobre desigualdades y privilegios ligados a estructuras de clase que, en el caso de Colombia, se han justificado en el hecho de que la gente negra “habita lugares inhóspitos”[1] como algunos territorios de la Costa Atlántica del país. Entre estos territorios, el Caribe colombiano ha sido históricamente identificado con la presencia de personas negras y mulatas, por lo que resulta inaudito, pero cierto, hablar de la persistencia del racismo como forma de discriminación fundada en prejuicios, que toma las características físicas como excusa para acusar de inferioridad a poblaciones racializadas como la negra. Se trata de una práctica social que ha pervivido a la lucha de movimientos civiles y transformaciones democráticas. Hoy, el racismo polariza el espacio de las diferencias sociales en el Caribe y contribuye a legitimar la desigualdad y el dominio de unas personas sobre otras.

Este dossier se presenta como una apuesta por fortalecer el debate académico sobre Raza y Racismo en el Caribe en el marco de proyecto “Connected Worlds, el Caribe, origen del mundo moderno, que ha recibido fondos de la Unión Europea a través del Programa Horizonte 2020, investigación e innovación Marie Curie, Acuerdo nº. 823846, dirigido por la profesora Consuelo Naranjo Orovio del Instituto de Historia, CSIC de España.
