Las Canarias como base de aprovisionamiento de navíos portugueses

Abstract

Es muy poco lo que se conoce sobre el comercio canario con Brasil, Guinea, Cabo Verde y Angola, salvo la evidencia de su existencia y de su importancia. Quizá por la dificultad que presentan las fuentes para su estudio, ya que los registros realizados en las islas por los jueces de Indias no se conservan entre los fondos de Contratación. Sólo el hallazgo de estos registros o el examen de los fondos de los archivos notariales pueden desvelar de alguna forma la cuantía y el volumen de este tráfico que fue indudablemente el más importante que mantuvieron los isleños durante casi un siglo. Por eso nos pareció interesante dedicar un poco de atención a estudiar la problemática que presentó este tráfico tanto por la competencia originada por su control como por el contrabando a que dio lugar y, sobre todo, ofrecer algunos datos sobre la cuantía del comercio y las personas en él implicadas obtenidos gracias a haber podido examinar algunos de estos registros a los que antes aludíamos a través de unos pleitos de Escribanía de Cámara del Archivo General de Indias.
