Opciones para el control de emisiones antropogénicas de mercurio

Abstract

El mercurio se encuentra presente en la naturaleza generalmente formando parte de minerales estables por lo que no representa ningún riesgo. Es con la actividad humana y la utilización de productos que contiene este elemento cuando se inicia la problemática del mercurio, aumentando notablemente sus emisiones. Este hecho, unido a su elevada toxicidad, capacidad de bioacumulación y persistencia en el medio ambiente, hace que la preocupación sobre el mercurio aumente y requiera una respuesta y acción a nivel global. En el año 2017 entra en vigor el Convenio de Minamata cuyo objetivo es proteger la salud humana y el medio ambiente de las emisiones antropogénicas de mercurio, limitando el uso y la circulación de productos que contengan este elemento, reduciendo sus emisiones y asegurando una gestión segura de los residuos que lo contienen. Todo ésto ha desencadenado que se desarrollen diferentes alternativas para la eliminación del mercurio gaseoso procedente de plantas industriales. En este trabajo se muestran algunas de las investigaciones desarrolladas en el INCARCSIC sobre este tema. Los trabajos de investigación más recientes están encaminados al desarrollo de carbones activados sostenibles y fácilmente regenerables.
