[EN] This research endeavours to offer insight into the origins of psychiatric care in France, starting from an analysis of the economic and social changes brought about by the Revolution. The political philosophy inspiring the Revolution is critically examined, as well as the changes introduced in health care during the early years. Special mention is made of the abolishment of the so-called "General Hospital" and of the reforms enforced by the Beggars Committee and the Council of Hospices and Poorhouses. In addition, a critical appraisal is made of the theory of the "long ecclipse" as referred to mental care since the Revolution in 1789 until the enforcement of the Insane Persons Act in 1838.
