Abstract

La teoría de la degeneración, formulada por MOREL y modificada en parte por MAGNAN, ejerció una gran influencia en la psiquiatría francesa y europea de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. MORALES MESEGUER1 piensa que pese a la gran cantidad de elementos especulativos y creenciales que contiene la obra de MOREL, la doctrina de la degeneración obtuvo una favorable acogida en el ambiente psiquiátrico francés del momento a causa de la fácil solución que ofrecía a todos los graves problemas que la investigación de las causas de la enfermedad tenía planteados. Con una concepción estrictamente somaticista, que remitía la enfermedad mental a un substrato físico -la anormal conformación corporal-, el degeneracionismo permitía explicar la clínica proteiforme y asistemática del enfermo mental a través de la tendencia al desequilibrio que tenía el terreno orgánico donde surgía, suministrando unas claves para el diagnóstico causal de tipo objetivo, ya que la conformación anormal del cuerpo del degenerado se hacía evidente en determinados caracteres de su morfología exterior -los estigmas-, y justificando sobre supuestos aparentemente científicos la marginación social del enfermo mental y su distanciamiento «cualitativo» del sujeto normal.
