El CO2 antropogénico (CANT), el que la humanidad incorpora a la atmósfera por la quema de combustibles fósiles, se disuelve parcialmente en el mar produciendo un aumento de acidez en el océano. Durante dos décadas (1974‐2006) se han realizado medidas directas de pH y otras variables del sistema del carbónico que ha permitido calcular la cantidad de CANT en el océano. A partir de estos resultados se obtuvo la evolución temporal del CANT integrado en distintas masas de agua del Atlántico Norte así como las tasas de acidificación
