Raza, evolucionismo, colonialismo y nación en el anarquismo español (1869-1918)

Abstract

Sobre el papel los anarquistas oponían al concepto de patria o raza la idea de la fraternidad universal de los trabajadores: en 1872, el órgano internacionalista La Federación declaraba enfáticamente que la única patria del obrero era el taller. El ideal universalista, inherente a buena parte de la historia del movimiento libertario se materializaba muchas veces en la denuncia del "espíritu de raza", un auténtico opio del pueblo, junto con el patriotismo y las creencias religiosas. Sin embargo, las tensiones y contradicciones se hicieron patentes. Muchos anarquistas pensaban no sólo que las razas existían, sino que tenían disposiciones y habilidades mentales que distinguían unas de otras. La raza aparecía de manera intermitente, e incómoda, cuando se hablaba del potencial de la ¿raza latina¿ o de los caracteres supuestamente degenerativos de la ¿raza española¿. Lo mismo se puede decir del imperialismo. En teoría se creía en la igualdad sustancial del género humano, y se condenaba la expansión colonial, pero a la vez se pensaba que había grupos humanos, - razas- que habían quedado rezagadas en la evolución progresiva. La ponencia explora no sólo las tensiones y contradicciones, sino también como a través de una amplia resignificación de la antropología evolucionista, se trataron de hacer compatibles los ideales universalistas y lo que se interpretaba como verdad científica incontrovertible
