La liquidación de un imperio mercantil a fines del s. XVI

Abstract

Como arquetipo del poderoso mercader de los tiempos de Felipe II, se puede destacar a Juan Antonio Corzo Vicentelo, que rodeado de parientes y personas, crea un gran imperio que se va a extinguir en los primeros años del rey a quien sirvió. Desde Sevilla, donde se instala definitivamente como hombre muy poderoso el mismo año en que Felipe se convierte en dueño absoluto del trono -1558-, el Corzo va a dirigir sus millonarios negocios que serán liquidados por los mismos años que termina el reinado. Una serie de cuestiones de todo tipo sugiere el fin del emporio económico de este gran mercader, de cuya figura ya me he ocupado en otras ocasiones. Ahora solo pretendo, basándome en unas cuentas que se encuentran en el A.G.I. de Sevilla, que me sirva de referencia para examinar la complicada estructura comercial entre Sevilla y Perú.
