El título de este artículo nos hace, quizá, partir de presupuestos de pueden inducir a confusión. No voy a hablar aquí de las ideas particulares del Emperador acerca del Islam y los musulmanes, ni del uso que hizo del enfrentamiento con el Islam, el Infiel por antonomasia, como argumento legitimador en su política imperial. Aquí me voy a referir sobre todo a los musulmanes interiores, a aquellos que habitaban la Península Ibérica durante el reinado de Carlos V, a los que se llama "mudéjares" antes de su conversión al cristianismo y "moriscos" después de ella.
