Abstract

Arnold Toynbee editó den 1970 por vez primera un importante texto, Ciudades en marcha. Cinco capítulos del libro estaban dedicados a "ciudades-capitales". No sólo no había ni una alusión a Madrid, sino que aseveraba, entre otras cosas que "la accesibilidad por agua de los abastecimientos importados ha sido manifiestamente la principal consideración en la elección de una ciudad para que sirviera como capital. ¡No sería por el Manzanares desde Lisboa!

Este trabajo forma parte de los que se realizan al calor del Proyecto de Investigación "Identidad urbana y grupos sociales", nº de Proyecto 06/0078/2000 de la CAM y que dirijo en el CSIC.
