Abstract

[EN] An important prt of the history of Spain, until the first half of the sixteenth century, was based on myths or legends. But, with Charles V, many renewal projects in the way of writing history appeared, starting with Juan Paéz de Castro and developing further during the reign of Philip II, thanks to Ambrosio de Morales, Juan de Ovando and Juan López de Velasco. It was in this environment that Mariana began to write his History of Spain. Its editio princeps goes back to 1592, and the first Spanish edition came up in 1601. Very soon, historiographical Humanism was split into «marianist» and «non-marianists». During the following three centuries, ther were many people that based their works on Mariana's writings, and some others even tried to continue Mariana's achievements. Thus, we may say that Mariana's History of Spain was a milestone in our knowledge of the past, at least until Modesto La Fuente's arrival.
