La costa gallega, situada en el extremo noroccidental de la Península ibérica con un litoral de 1720 km, es una costa recortada, muy irregular, penetrada por una serie de depresiones tectónicas profundas invadidas por el mar: las rías. Estas se entremezclan en el litoral con zonas de acantilado y de extensos arenales, frecuentemente combinados con lagunas costeras comunicadas con el mar
