Abstract

La lignocelulosa es la principal materia prima renovable para un desarrollo industrial sostenible. Los hongos juegan un papel central en el reciclado del C en los ecosistemas terrestres. Como consecuencia, poseen (y secretan) todas las enzimas implicadas en la transformación de lignina y carbohidratos vegetales, aportándonos herramientas biotecnológicas para las biorrefinerías de lignocelulosa. La degradación de celulosa ha sido considerada un proceso hidrolítico hasta el descubrimiento de Cu-oxidorreductasas responsables del ataque inicial al polímero cristalino ("lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases") [1]. La degradación de la lignina, definida como una "combustión enzimática", comenzó a ser mejor comprendida tras los primeros estudios "ómicos" de este complejo proceso multi-enzimático [2]. Las clásicas hemo-peroxidasas de basidiomicetos [3] siguen considerándose implicadas en el ataque a la lignina, junto con lacasas y flavo-oxidasas, pero estudios recientes han revelado la asombrosa diversidad generada durante la evolución de los ancestros de estos grupos de enzimas [4] y su adaptación a la evolución de la lignina en las plantas vasculares [5]. También recientemente, se ha puesto de manifiesto el enorme potencial de las hemo-peroxigenasas de estos hongos como biocatalizadores industriales [6]. 1. Martínez. Science. 2016, 352, 1050-1 2.
