Abstract

[EN] This paper is analyzing the inside world of the naval officer Federico Gravina, his sensibility, their habits and cultural concerns, a nearly unexplored territory. It study an exceptional document from the perspective of social and cultural history of the 18th century Spanish Navy: the Descripción de Constantinopla by Gravina, a result of his voyage to Istanbul in 1788, commanding the frigate Santa Rosa, which was carrying the Sultan’s delegate from the Spanish Court to the Otoman capital. Though Gravina stayed in that city for a short time, he picked up many news of that culture –very exotic for an European of that time- and made personal observations on their features.
