The main objective of this work is to study the application of RAPD technique for species identification in six species of cephalopods belonging to the family Ommastrephidade (Illex argentinus, Illex illecebrosus, Illex coindetti, Dosidicus gigas, Nototodarus sloani and Todarosis eblanae). Two different primers, three annealing temperatures and three template DNA concentrations were analyzed to chose the most appropiate reaction conditions for this group of species. In addition, several individuals (from 3 to 5) of each species were employed under the same reaction conditions to test the intraspecific variability of the patterns obtained and the suitability of this technique for the identification of cephalopods in seafood products
