Abstract

La degeneración macular asociada a la edad (DMAE) y el glaucoma constituyen las enfermedades oculares neurodegenerativas más frecuentes relacionadas con el sistema visual, pudiendo acarrear la posibilidad de desarrollar ceguera irreversible con el tiempo. Se requiere, por tanto, la aplicación de enfoques analíticos avanzados tanto para la identificación de biomarcadores (proteínas, metabolitos, elementos esenciales) que permitan una detección temprana de estas patologías. Es importante resaltar que, en el caso del sistema visual, el análisis de muestras con bajos niveles de concentración de metales y metaloproteínas, así como el volumen limitado de las mismas (lágrima, humor acuso, cultivos celulares) o su elevada complejidad (suero), hace necesario el desarrollo de metodologías analíticas innovadoras que sean rápidas, sensibles, con bajos límites de detección y con capacidad de análisis multiplexado. En este contexto, las técnicas basadas en espectrometría de masas tienen una elevada aplicabilidad durante el desarrollo de metodologías analíticas cuantitativas. Así, el objetivo de la Tesis Doctoral ha sido el desarrollo y la aplicación de nuevas metodologías basadas en espectrometría de masas elemental para el estudio de elementos esenciales y (metalo)-proteínas implicados en enfermedades oculares neurodegenerativas asociadas a la edad en distintos tipos de muestras biológicas.
